Google Ads for accountants split by client value

Google AdWords for accountants, now called Google Ads: campaigns split by client value, so tax-return clicks stop eating the advisory budget.

Google AdWords for accountants, split by the clients you want

Rock Solid Marketing manages Google Ads for accountants, bookkeepers and BAS agents across Australia from our Mildura office. Many practices still call it Google AdWords, the name Google dropped in 2018, and plenty of accounts still run on settings from that era. The usual result is one campaign, broad keywords and a budget spent on tax-return clicks in August.

We split your campaigns by what a client is worth. Tax returns get a capped campaign in the July to October rush. Business advisory, BAS and bookkeeping, and SMSF clients get year-round campaigns with their own budgets and landing pages. Accounting practices are among the businesses we've worked with, though we keep their names private.

Ads management sits inside our partnership plans, from $4,500 + GST a month, with ad spend paid straight to Google. It's one part of our wider marketing for accountants.

Common problems

What gets in the way, and how we fix it

  1. Tax season clicks swallow the budget, and advisory searches get nothing.

    What we do

Tax returns run in their own capped campaign from July to October. Advisory, BAS and SMSF campaigns keep their own budgets all year.

  2. Our ads show up for people looking for myTax or the ATO login.

    What we do

Negative keyword lists block myTax, ATO login, free tax help, accounting jobs and courses, and we add new ones from the search terms report each month.

  3. We inherited an old AdWords account, and nobody knows what it's doing.

    What we do

We audit it first: conversion tracking, keywords, locations, ad schedule and search terms. Then we keep what works and rebuild the rest rather than starting from zero.

How we run your ads

AdWords management for accounting firms, split by service

Each campaign answers three questions: what is this client worth over the years, when do they search, and can the practice take them on right now?

A campaign per service line

Individual tax returns, business advisory, BAS and bookkeeping, and SMSF each get their own campaign, budget and landing page. The services worth most to the practice get the biggest share.

Budgets that follow the tax year

Tax-return spend rises from July and stops when your diary fills or the 31 October deadline for self-lodgers passes. Advisory and BAS campaigns keep running while the team has more time.

Negatives for DIY and job searches

Searches for myTax, the ATO login, free tax help, accounting jobs, courses and software tutorials are blocked. We read the search terms report every month and block new ones.

Ad copy inside the rules

No promised refunds or tax savings, and registered tax agent or CPA wording only where the public registers show it. Your practice approves every ad before it runs.

Call ads during office hours

Call ads and click-to-call landing pages run when someone can answer. An ad schedule pauses calls after hours, so prospects aren't left talking to an answering machine.

Cost per enquiry, by service

The monthly report shows calls, forms and cost per enquiry for each service line. The partners can then see whether advisory clients are worth what they cost to win.

How it works

How a partnership runs

Every partnership starts with a strategy, then runs month by month with one plan and one point of contact.

  1. Free discovery call

A free 30-minute call about your business, your goals and whether a partnership is the right fit.

  2. Strategy and roadmap

We get to know your goals, customers, challenges and opportunities, then give you a practical marketing roadmap.

  3. Monthly delivery

Your account manager runs the plan each month across the channels it needs, from social media and SEO to email and press releases.

  4. Meet and report

A monthly meeting by phone or visit, with a HubSpot dashboard that shows what the work is achieving.

How it starts

AdWords management for accountants starts with an account audit

If you have an existing account, we start there: conversion tracking, campaign structure, keywords, locations, ad schedule and the last year of search terms. Old accounts often leak money somewhere, and the audit shows where.

Then we sit down with the partners to set the value of each service, the months you have capacity and the towns or suburbs you serve. That becomes the campaign plan and the budget split.

You keep the audit findings in writing.

  • Conversion tracking for calls and forms
  • Keywords and a year of search terms
  • Locations and ad schedule
  • Value of each service line
  • Months the practice has capacity

Spend where the valuable clients search.

All FAQs

Ads management is part of our partnership plans, which start at $4,500 + GST a month for 28 hours. Those hours also cover SEO, content and reporting. Ad spend is paid to Google on top, and you set it. Managed on their own, one campaign would be an estimated $2,000 + GST a month plus 10% of spend.

Yes. Google renamed AdWords to Google Ads in 2018, so Google AdWords for accountants and Google Ads are the same product. What changed is the automation: smart bidding and broad match now make more decisions for you. Older accounts often need their match types, tracking and settings updated to suit how the platform works today.

Advertise the services you want more of, not the firm in general. Business advisory, BAS and bookkeeping, and SMSF clients often stay for years and are worth more than a one-off tax return, so they deserve their own campaigns. Tax returns can still run in season, on a cap. Every ad should lead to a page about that one service.

Run service campaigns all year and lift tax-return spend from July, when individuals start lodging. Many self-lodgers rush before the 31 October deadline, so searches often climb in September and October. If your diary fills, we pause or cap that campaign. Quieter months suit advisory and BAS campaigns, when the team has time to take on new clients.

Yes, and we'd rather keep its history than start fresh. We audit the account first, checking conversion tracking, campaigns, keywords, locations and the search terms you've paid for. Then we keep what's working, fix the tracking and rebuild the rest. Accounts built under the old AdWords for accounting firms model often need new negatives and updated bidding before more spend.

We're a marketing agency that runs more than ads, not an accountant PPC agency that only buys clicks. That matters because a click is only worth paying for if the landing page, Google profile and follow-up turn it into a client, and we handle those too. Callen Mowatt, our Google Ads specialist, runs the campaigns, and your account manager ties them to everything else.

Say what you do, for whom and where, and keep it factual. Leave out promised refunds, tax savings or claims you can't back up, because the Australian Consumer Law and APES 110 both apply. Registered tax agent, CPA or CA wording appears only where the public registers show it, and your practice approves every ad before it runs.

Your practice does. We set up or work inside an account in your name, with ad spend billed to you by Google. The history, conversion data and audiences stay with you. Our partnership plans have no lock-in contracts. If one campaign is all you need, we'll tell you before we quote and suggest the cheaper option.
