Digital Marketing Reads – Volume 23

Here’s the latest instalment of Digital Marketing Reads, a roundup of some of the more interesting articles we’ve read lately in the digital marketing world.

Google: SSL Certificate Does Not Boost SEO

Back in 2014 when SSL certificates first rolled out, it was said that having a secure site and getting this SSL certificate would help boost your search rankings. The idea was that sites with SSL (that is, with a https:// URL) would be favored over non-SSL sites (http:// URLs).

However, now that it’s 2023 and most sites are secure with SSL, there is no SEO benefit to it. How can there be when pretty much everyone is doing it. According to this article, an SSL certificate is “only a very lightweight signal” for ranking, which means that of the thousands of things that can help a site rank on Google, it falls closer to the bottom of the pack, thus having virtually no impact.

That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t bother switching to https:// though! It’s important to make sure your site is secure, so if you haven’t yet sorted out your SSL certificate, get in touch with our Mildura digital marketing team!
