Media planning before you spend

Media planning for Australian businesses: a written plan that decides where your ad budget goes, when it runs and how you'll know it worked.

Media planning

A plan that starts with your customers, not the channels

Rock Solid Marketing does media planning for Australian businesses, most of them regional, deciding where your advertising should run, when and for how much. You've probably had the calls: a radio package this week, a directory listing next week, a newspaper feature the week after. Each sounds reasonable. Together they rarely add up to a plan.

A written plan fixes that. It names the people you need to reach, the channels they actually use, the weeks that matter to your business and the budget for each. It also says how each line will be measured, so next year's plan is better than this one.

You can use the plan with your own team or have us run it. Partnership plans start from $4,500 + GST a month, and every plan starts with a free 30-minute discovery call.

Why plan first

Why a plan beats a pile of bookings

A plan turns separate ad decisions into one budget you can see, question and measure from month to month.

Audience before channels

We start with who buys from you: where they live, what they read, watch and scroll. Channels come second, chosen because your customers use them, not because a rep called.

Timed to regional seasons

Harvest, school holidays, tax time and the tourist months all move demand in regional towns. Your plan puts the money into the weeks your customers are ready to buy.

A budget split you can defend

Every dollar has a line: how much goes to search, social, radio or print, and why. When someone asks where the marketing money went, the answer is on one page.

Online channels sized properly

Digital media planning starts with real search demand and audience sizes from Google's and Meta's own planning tools, so online budgets match what's actually available.

One message, every channel

Integrated media planning means your radio ad, Facebook posts and website say the same thing in the same weeks. One message across channels is easier for customers to remember.

Measures set before launch

Each channel gets a measure before it starts: calls, form enquiries, bookings or store visits. At review time you compare results against the plan, not against a feeling.

A plan you can hand over

If you have staff who book ads, they get a plan they can follow week by week. If you'd rather we run it, your account manager does, inside a partnership plan.

How it works

How a plan comes together

Four steps from the first call to a plan you can act on.

  1. Free discovery call

A free 30-minute call about your goals, your customers and what you've tried in advertising so far.

  2. Research and questions

We review your sales pattern, past results and local competitors, and run a customer workshop if it will help.

  3. Draft and sign-off

You get a written plan and media calendar, talk it through with us, and sign off when it's right.

  4. Run it or hand it over

We book and manage the plan inside a partnership, or hand it to your team with notes on how to measure it.

How it starts

From a blank page to a written plan

Our media planning strategy starts with questions, not channels. Who buys from you, how far do they travel, and what made your last good month good? We look at your sales pattern across the year, your past ad results and what competitors run in your area.

Where it helps, Dr. Damian Collins can run a customer workshop or focus group to test assumptions before money is committed. Then we draft the plan, walk you through it and adjust it until you're happy to sign off.

  • Your sales pattern across the year
  • Past ad results and invoices
  • What competitors run in your area
  • A customer workshop or focus group, if useful
  • A draft plan, then your sign-off

You sign off the plan before a dollar is spent.

A one-off plan costs $175 + GST an hour, usually 6 to 10 hours in total. That's about $1,050 to $1,750 + GST, an estimate until you get a fixed quote after the discovery call. Ongoing planning and booking sits inside partnership plans from $4,500 + GST a month. If a one-off plan your own team can run will do the job, we'll tell you before we quote.

It's the job of deciding where, when and how often your ads run, and how much each placement gets. A planner weighs who your customers are, which channels reach them and what each costs. The result is a written plan, so spending decisions are made once and on purpose, instead of one sales call at a time.

In advertising, it's choosing the channel mix, timing and weight of a campaign so enough of the right people see it often enough. Planners talk about reach (how many people see it) and frequency (how often). A regional campaign might pair two weeks of local radio with Facebook ads aimed at the same towns. We'd rather run fewer channels well than spread a small budget thin.

A media plan is the document that comes out of the planning. It sets out who you're targeting, which channels, which weeks, how much for each and how you'll measure it. It's usually a short written summary plus a calendar or spreadsheet. We keep ours to a few pages, because a plan nobody reads doesn't get followed.

An advertising media plan covers six things. They are the goal, the audience, the channels, the flighting (which weeks the ads run), the budget for each line and the measures. A good one also lists the creative each channel needs, such as a radio script or a set of Facebook images, so production starts on time and nothing is booked without an ad ready to run.

Most media plans look like a calendar, with channels down the side and weeks across the top. Each filled cell shows what runs, what it costs and what it should achieve, with totals at the bottom. We add a one-page summary in plain English, so you can follow the reasoning without decoding the spreadsheet. It's easy to share with a business partner or your bookkeeper.

Start with one clear goal and a plain description of your customer. Then list the channels they use, map the weeks that matter, split the budget and set a measure for each line. Our media planning process adds a review of your past results first, because last year's numbers are the cheapest research you have.

Planning decides what should happen; buying makes it happen. The plan chooses the audience, channels, timing and budget. Media buying books the space, bids or negotiates for it, and checks the ads ran. Some media planning and buying agencies split the two between teams. For a regional business, it usually works better when the same people do both, because the plan and the bookings never drift apart.

It's one service covering both halves: writing the plan, then booking and managing the ads. As a media planning and buying agency, we write the plan, run Google Ads and Meta ads in-house, compare local radio and press quotes, and report results in HubSpot each month. You approve the plan and every booking first.

No. You can buy a one-off plan at the hourly rate and hand it to your own team. Partnership plans suit businesses that want us to run the plan as well, and they have no lock-in contracts. Either way, you keep the plan and the calendar, and you can bring it back to us for a review later.
