Regional economy

Destination marketing for regions and towns

Destination marketing for councils, regional tourism boards and visitor centres that need one clear story about their place, shared by every operator.

Partnership plans from $4,500 + GST a month

For destinations

Marketing a place, not a single business

Rock Solid Marketing provides destination marketing for councils, regional tourism boards, visitor centres and destination marketing organisations across regional Australia. Promoting a place is different from marketing one business. You're selling a reason to visit, then sharing the bookings across dozens of operators who each want to be seen.

Our tourism work is with operators on the ground: accommodation groups in far west NSW, tour companies and caravan parks. We know what visitors search for, how they plan a trip and what makes them book. For destinations we turn that into a shared story, itineraries and things-to-do content, an events calendar people actually use, and campaigns operators can join in on.

Partnership plans start from $4,500 + GST a month, and project work is quoted. The first step is a free 30-minute discovery call.

Common problems

What gets in the way, and how we fix it

  1. Your destination website lists everything and inspires no one.

    What we do

We build itineraries and themed guides around how visitors really travel, such as a long weekend, a school holiday or a road trip.

  2. Operators each market themselves and the region's story gets lost.

    What we do

We create a shared story, image library and campaign calendar operators can use, so every post adds to the same picture.

  3. Events happen but visitors find out too late.

    What we do

We set up an events calendar and promote key events months ahead, with content operators can share.

Who it’s for

Is it the right fit?

Who it’s for

  • Councils with a tourism or economic development team
  • Regional tourism boards and associations
  • Visitor information centres
  • Chambers of commerce promoting their town

Not a fit

  • You need a national brand campaign with a large media budget
  • You want visitor numbers promised in advance
  • You need procurement panel membership we don't hold

How it starts

Destination marketing strategies start with your visitors

We start with who visits now and who you want more of: day-trippers, families in school holidays, grey nomads, event-goers or business travellers. Then we look at how they plan, what they search for and which operators they book with.

From there we can start with an audit of your website, content and campaigns, or go straight to a plan for the year. Either way, operators are part of it from the start, because a regional campaign only works when the businesses on the ground join in.

  • Visitor groups and seasons mapped
  • Website and content audited
  • Operators consulted on the plan
  • Shared story and image library planned
  • Events and campaign calendar

Know your visitors, then give operators one story to tell.

In 2025, social media remains one of the most powerful tools small business owners can use to build their brand, connect with customers, and drive sales. Ongoing work for destinations fits our partnership plans, from $4,500 + GST a month, covering content, social media, SEO, events promotion and reporting. It promotes a place, such as a town, region or state, as somewhere to visit. It tells the story of the destination, showcases its experiences and events, and sends visitors on to local operators to book. It's usually led by councils, tourism boards or destination marketing organisations.

A destination marketing organisation, or DMO, is the body responsible for promoting a place to visitors. In Australia that can be a state tourism body, a regional tourism board, a council tourism team or a local association. Destination marketing organizations, as the term is often spelled overseas, do similar work worldwide.

Tourism marketing usually promotes one business, such as a motel or tour. Promoting a destination means marketing the whole place and sharing the benefit across many operators. Our tourism marketing page covers operators; this page is for the councils and boards that market the region. The two work best when they're planned together.

Clear visitor groups, a story that sets the place apart, a year-round calendar of reasons to visit and a way for operators to join in. It should name what will be measured and how results will be reported to councils, boards and members. Keep it short enough that people actually use it.

We don't claim a list of destination clients. We work with regional organisations, have redesigned websites for groups of councils, and work with tourism operators across far west NSW and beyond. We'll be upfront about that, and bring an operator's view of what makes visitors book.

Often, yes. Small towns compete for the same weekend visitors as bigger centres, and a clear story, good itineraries and a working events calendar can make a real difference. Start small, involve operators and measure what changes before spending more. Operators who see results become your best supporters.
