Book marketing for authors with a launch date

Book marketing for self-published authors and small publishers: a launch plan, local media, an author website and ads only when the numbers work.

Press releases from $1,000 + GST

Book marketing

Your book is a small business with one product and a launch date

Rock Solid Marketing provides book marketing for self-published authors, small publishers and community writers across Australia. Writing the book was the hard part, you thought. Then you learned that the launch, the reviews, the bookshops and the media are mostly up to you.

We treat your book like a product launch. A simple author platform (website and email list), a press release with a local angle, launch events and social posts, and ads only when the price of the book makes them worth it. Our PR team includes journalists, so local media pitches are written the way editors want them.

Press releases start from $1,000 + GST, and launch planning is $175 + GST an hour. Your first step is a free 30-minute discovery call.

Common problems

What gets in the way, and how we fix it

  1. The book is out and the only people who know are your friends on Facebook.

    What we do

We plan the launch weeks ahead: a press release with a local angle, a launch event, posts and an email to everyone who's asked to hear from you.

  2. You're spending on ads but each sale costs more than you earn from it.

    What we do

We check the numbers first. Ads only make sense when your royalty per copy covers the cost, so we often start with free and low-cost channels.

  3. You don't have a website or a way to contact readers.

    What we do

We set up a simple author website and an email sign-up, so readers of this book hear about the next one.

What we do for authors

Book promotion and marketing from platform to launch

Each piece builds on the last, so you're not starting from zero with every book.

Press releases with a local angle

Andrew Mevissen and our PR team write releases that give local media a reason to cover your book: the author's story, the town, the subject.

An author website

A simple site with your books, where to buy, your story, events and an email sign-up, so readers and media can find you.

Launch events

Posters, invitations and promotion for a launch at a bookshop, library or local venue, the way we promote community events.

Social posts readers share

Behind-the-book stories, cover reveals, quotes and event photos, planned around the launch rather than posted at random, so readers have something to share.

Advertising a book, only when it pays

Meta ads or retailer ads tested with small budgets, with the cost per sale checked against your royalty before spending more.

Launch materials

Bookmarks, posters, social graphics and a media kit with your photo, bio and book details, all designed to match your cover.

Who it’s for

Is it the right fit?

Who it’s for

  • Self-published and indie authors
  • Small and community publishers
  • Business owners publishing a book about their field
  • Local history and family history writers

Not a fit

  • You want a promised number of sales or a bestseller listing
  • You want fake or paid reviews
  • The book isn't finished and has no publication date

How it starts

Book marketing for authors starts with who will read it

We start with the reader: who the book is for, where they already gather and what they read about. A local history book, a business book and a novel each have very different readers and very different launches.

Then we build a launch plan backwards from your publication date: platform first, then media, events and posts, and ads only if the numbers stack up. You get a written plan you can follow yourself, or we can run it with you.

  • Your readers described in plain words
  • A launch timeline from your publication date
  • Media angles and a contact list
  • Website and email sign-up planned
  • Ad budget only if the numbers work

Find the readers first, then reach them.

Mildura CCTV & Data

Rock Solid Marketing created the brand and WordPress website for Mildura CCTV & Data, a CCTV, security and data cabling installer in Irymple VIC, along with customer guides, SEO and Facebook posts.

We approached Rock Solid Marketing to build our online store for our retail division and to look after our existing website. The professionalism of Sean and his team from day one was incredible, they took the time to sit down with us to discuss our exact requirements and they offered suggestions for the build which would improve the overall running of the store.

The finished result of our online store is nothing short of fantastic- it integrates with our point of sale software, it is very easy to navigate, and presents and operates as a professionally made web store should. Since completion and hand over, the back up support we receive from Rock Solid Marketing is remarkable- nothing is too much trouble and we can contact the team at any time with any questions we may have. I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending Sean, Janine and the team from Rock Solid Marketing for building or revamping a website, creating an online store to suit your business or with online marketing.

All FAQs

It depends on what you choose. Press releases start from $1,000 + GST, launch planning is $175 + GST an hour, and author websites start from $5,000 + GST. Most self-published authors start with a press release and a launch plan. If a well-written release and a launch event will do the job, we'll tell you before we quote.

Start with your readers: who they are and where they gather. Build a simple author platform with a website and email list, then plan a launch with a local media angle, an event and steady posts. Add ads only when your royalty per copy can cover the cost of each sale.

As a self-published author, you're also the publisher. Make sure your book's details are complete with online retailers, ask your local bookshop and library about stocking it, send review copies to readers in your genre, and pitch local media with a story about you, not just the book.

Start two to three months out. Share the cover and the story behind the book, build your email list, line up a launch venue and prepare your press release. Pre-orders, where your retailer offers them, give readers an easy early step. Ask a few early readers for honest reviews you can share on launch day.

There are three main options. Retailer ads on the platforms that sell your book, Meta ads aimed at readers of similar authors, and local media such as newspapers and community radio. Test with small budgets and track the cost per sale. If each sale costs more than you earn, change the ad or stop.

Lean on free and low-cost channels first: local media, library and bookshop events, book clubs, community groups and your own email list. A well-timed press release can reach more local readers than a modest ad budget. Spend on ads once you know which message works.

Use the ad tools of the stores that sell it, plus Meta ads aimed at readers of comparable books. Send ads to the store page, not your homepage, so readers can buy in one step. Keep your email list growing, because it's the one audience you own.

Sometimes, but often less than authors expect. Many publishers focus their budgets on a few lead titles each season, so most authors are asked to help with their own promotion. Ask your publisher early what they'll do, then plan your own efforts around it. Local media and events are often where an author can add the most.

Publishers present upcoming titles to booksellers, send review copies to media and reviewers, organise author events and sometimes run ads. Small and self-publishers do the same things on a smaller scale. A clear plan, started months before publication, matters more than a big budget. Self-published authors can borrow the same steps, starting with review copies.

We don't claim a list of author clients. Our experience is in PR, storytelling and launches, such as the brand and pitch work for Mallee's Living Histories and the launch of Sunraysia's Walking Hockey Festival. As a marketing agency for authors, we'll be upfront about that and plan around your book and your readers.
