Media release distribution to the right journalists

Press release distribution for Australian businesses: your news sent to the journalists who cover it, then followed up by people who know newsrooms.

Media releases

Press release distribution that reaches a person, not a list

Rock Solid Marketing handles media release distribution for businesses and organisations across Australia: we build a media list for each release, send it to the journalists who cover your topic and region, and follow up personally. Your release lands in the inbox of someone likely to write about it.

You might have paid a distribution site before and watched your release appear on dozens of websites nobody reads. Or you've emailed the local paper and heard nothing back. Distribution works when the right reporter gets the release on the right day, with a photo and someone to call.

Writing and distribution come together in one package, from $1,000 + GST. It starts with a free 30-minute discovery call.

How distribution works

Distributing press releases the way journalists prefer

Journalists get hundreds of releases a week, so every step is about making yours easy to open, easy to use and easy to follow up.

A media list for each release

A new store in Renmark and a national product launch need different lists. We pick reporters by round (business, agriculture, health, sport) and by region, rather than sending the same list every time.

Sent as a personal email

Your release goes out as a short, personal email with the story in the first line, not as a mass mailout. Journalists reply to people, so that's how we send it.

Timed for the newsroom

Regional papers, radio newsrooms and weekly trade titles all have different deadlines. We time your release to suit them, and use an embargo when an announcement must hold until a set date.

Everything a reporter needs

Each release carries a clear headline, the key facts, a quote from you, a high-resolution photo with a caption and a contact who will answer the phone.

Follow-up that gets answers

A short follow-up call or email to the most likely outlets often turns silence into a story. Our team has worked in newsrooms, so they know when to call and when to leave it.

Coverage tracked in Meltwater

As a Meltwater partner, we monitor where your release is picked up, online and in print, and send you the coverage so you can share it.

How it works

How your media release goes out

Five steps from your news to a report on where it ran.

  1. Discovery call

A free 30-minute call about your announcement, your timing and which audiences and regions matter most to you.

  2. Q&A and writing

A short Q&A gives us the facts and your quote. We write the release, and you approve the final copy.

  3. Build the list

We choose the journalists and outlets for this story, by round and region, and set the send date and any embargo.

  4. Send and follow up

The release goes out as personal emails, then we follow up with the outlets most likely to run it.

  5. Report the coverage

Meltwater tracks pick-ups online and in print. You get the coverage list and links to share.

Agency or platform

Media release distribution in Australia without a wire

A press release platform or newswire posts your release to a large network of sites for a flat fee. That's fast, but most of those copies sit on pages journalists never read, and a posted release isn't the same as a story.

We send releases from our own media contacts instead, so each one goes to a reporter who might use it. When the Walking Hockey Festival launched in Sunraysia, we wrote the release and sent the story to local media. The brand-new event drew early media attention.

  • Sent from our own media contacts
  • Journalists chosen by round and region
  • Personal follow-up with the likeliest outlets
  • Coverage report when the release runs

One right reporter beats a thousand inboxes.

Our press release package starts from $1,000 + GST and includes the consultation, Q&A, research, writing and distribution to journalists and publications around Australia. There are no wire fees on top. Follow-up interviews, media liaison or a second release are quoted, or estimated at $175 + GST an hour.

Press releases are distributed by email to journalists, by paid newswire platforms, or both. Email to a chosen list of reporters gets read; wire services reach more sites but fewer people. Most releases that turn into stories reach a journalist directly, then get a follow-up call or email a day later.

Find the journalists who cover your topic in the outlets your customers read. Email each one the release in the body of the email, not as an attachment. Put the news in the subject line, add a photo and your phone number, then follow up once. Keep a simple list for next time.

Match the release to the outlet. Australia's regional papers, local radio newsrooms and trade titles each want a local or industry angle, so one generic release rarely works everywhere. Send early in the week, avoid public holidays, and give regional outlets a local spokesperson they can interview.

Most paid distribution services publish your release with links marked nofollow, so they pass little or no value to your rankings. The links that help come when a journalist writes their own story and links to your website. That's why we send releases to reporters rather than posting them across networks.

Not for most small businesses. A press release distribution platform sends your release to many sites at once, but nobody pitches it or follows it up. An agency writes the release for journalists and talks to them. If you only need a release on record for investors, a platform may be enough, and we'll say so.

The best press release distribution for a small business is usually a short, targeted list of local and industry journalists, not a national blast. A business in Mildura or Broken Hill gets more from its regional paper, local radio and one trade title than from hundreds of websites. Online press release distribution can add reach later.

No one can promise that. Editors decide what runs, based on the news value and what else happened that day. We improve your odds by finding the strongest angle, sending it to the right reporters and following up. If your announcement isn't news yet, we'll tell you before you pay for a release.
