Digital Marketing Reads – Volume 21

Here’s the latest instalment of Digital Marketing Reads, a roundup of some of the more interesting articles we’ve read lately in the digital marketing world.

What should the title tag length be in 2023?

It’s been best practice for many years to ensure your page title tags are under 70 characters (ideally 55-60). Why? Because any longer than that, and the title gets cut off on Google search results, which is neither good for SEO nor the user experience.

What’s more, a Google update in August 2021 made it so that title tags can actually get overridden by other page elements if they’re too long, or stuffed with keywords.

According to this recent article, Google uses whatever you have put as the HTML title tag when determining search rankings, NOT the truncated or overridden title tag that may appear in its place. Therefore, the length of the title tag really doesn’t matter as much as we’ve been made to believe. Whew!

TikTok vs. YouTube: Which Is Better For You?

It’s the battle of the top 2 video sharing platforms, and an excellent question considering that there are far too many social media platforms to keep up with these days.

At the moment, YouTube is the #3 and TikTok is the #5 platform in terms of popularity. But one might be better for your business than the other.

According to this article:

  • TikTok is better if your audience is younger (<30), or your videos are shorter, or your content centers around dance, comedy, or beauty
  • YouTube is better if your audience is a little older, or your videos are longer, or your content is more how-to, tutorials, DIY, or life hacks.

Another point to note is that YouTube generally brings in a lot more organic traffic; so if you’re willing to invest in YouTube SEO, that might be a better fit for your business.

A guide to Google Analytics 4 for marketing agencies

Unless your a digital marketing agency or web designer, you probably haven’t heard much about the new Google Analytics 4.

The short of it is: The old version of Google Analytics (and the one you are most likely to have unless you created your GA property in the past year or so) is being phased out by a new version. As of now, both still work – but as of July 1, 2023, the old Universal Analytics will no longer function and the new GA 4 will be the only Google Analytics that will track website traffic.

Our Mildura web design team highly recommend that you have a look at this article and make sure you have a GA4 property set up to track your traffic. It’s ok to keep both UA and GA4 tags on your site for the time being.
