Here’s the latest instalment of Digital Marketing Reads, a roundup of some of the more interesting articles we’ve read lately in the digital marketing world.
When your business doesn’t need SEO
We don’t say this often, but it’s true: sometimes SEO is not what a business needs in order to reach their goals.
This article highlights 5 instances where SEO might not be the appropriate for a business to make at a given time, including:
- When they need quick results (in which case, PPC or paid advertising is a better option)

- When their brand is already very well known

Threads Tests Keyword Search In Australia & New Zealand
Since our last digital marketing reads instalment, the Threads app has launched. In case this is news to you, Threads is an offshoot of Instagram where users can share text updates and post replies in “threads” (similar to Twitter). The app garnered 30 million downloads on its first day, making it the fastest-growing social media platform to-date.
As the article title says, Threads is currently testing a new keyword search function for AUS and NZ users. This could potentially be a great way for a business to be found on the app, if they post using words and phrases that their target market are searching for (SEO anyone?).

Google September 2023 helpful content system update rolling out
During the last two weeks of September, Google is rolling out its latest “helpful content system update”, the first one since December of last year.
Note that this isn’t a “core update“, but rather it’s an update that aims to “more deeply understand content created from a personal or expert point of view” with “a greater focus on content with unique expertise and experience”.
Translation: Google wants to prioritise content written by actual experts, not by people who have utilised AI or have written an article exclusively for SEO purposes. The overarching goal has always been to rank high quality, genuine, helpful pages higher, and Google updates like this one are simply little tweaks to the algorithm in an attempt to accomplish this goal a little better.
As always, if you’re hit by a Google update, don’t panic! Give your site some time to bounce back. If a few months pass and your site still has not recovered from the drop, it might be time to enlist the help of our Mildura SEO experts 😉
